About Clare Island

Clare Island is the largest of the islands in Clew Bay, roughly about 5km off the coast of Mayo. The island is accessible by ferry only and Clare Island Fast Ferries operate daily ferry crossings from Roonagh pier, along the Wild Atlantic Way.

Clare Island Fast Ferries is owned and operated by the O’ Malley Family based on Clare Island, Co. Mayo. It is a subsidiary of O’ Malley Ferries (Clare Island) Ltd. The O’Malley family are natives of Clare Island. They have been seafarers for many generations.

We currently have two ferries in operation. The first ferry, which is known as “True Light”, is a 38 passenger ferry that provides a year round link between Clare Island and the mainland. It has been recognised as the fastest ferry which is operating in Co. Mayo with the journey to Clare Island taking just ten minutes. We also operate “Tormore”, a 96 passenger ferry.

Clare Islands magnificent silhouette dominates the Atlantic horizon and the island guards the entrance of the Bay. Its natural beauty and unique history and culture makes it a highlight of any trip or holiday to the West of Ireland.

Clare Islands remarkably varied terrain makes it a haven for the serious hill walker and the casual stroller alike.

Other attractions on Clare Island include the beautiful sandy beach which surrounds the main harbour, over looked by Grace O’ Malleys Castle. Also, the 12th Century Cistercian Abbey containing Grace O’ Malleys resting place with original mosaics on the walls dating back to the 14th century.

The 19th Century Napoleonic Signal Tower is located on the most westerly point of the Island. It is overlooking the Atlantic Ocean and the beautiful Clare Island lighthouse, now restored to a luxurious guesthouse, which is perched high on the craggy Northern Cliffs overlooking Achill Island and Westport. There are many places of beauty and wonder for the visitor and local alike.
